In November, a group from North Western Synod concluded their Faith-Filled Life stream of Stepwise with a memorable away day at North Blackburn United Reformed Church.
After months of Zoom sessions exploring discipleship topics like recognising fellow Christians and hearing God鈥檚 call, Ed Lyne鈥檚, a Northern College student who is completing a placement within North Western Synod, said it was a joy to meet in person and reflect on their shared journey.
He explained how Zoom provided a safe space for honest discussions, allowing the group to tackle challenging topics with openness鈥攆rom grappling with life鈥檚 difficulties to exploring the emotional weight of comforting others. One standout activity examined whether phrases like 鈥渢hey鈥檙e in a better place now鈥 are helpful or unhelpful, sparking thoughtful debates that highlighted the importance of empathy and context.
During the away day, Ed shared how the group explored the theme of 鈥渃hallenges鈥, guided by John 6:66-71, where some of Jesus鈥 disciples turn away. This prompted heartfelt reflection such as questioning whether the challenges that life throws may cause people to walk away from Jesus to work out their own problems?
鈥淪haring our struggles over months of conversation brought a depth to these discussions that was truly moving,鈥 said Ed.
The day ended with powerful prayer projects鈥攆rom a community prayer wall to a scrapbook of reflections鈥攅ach showcasing the faith and creativity of the group.
鈥淜nowing the challenges behind these creations made them all the more inspiring,鈥 added Ed.
